Overview

God is a God who speaks, and we bear his image as communicators. Speech is incredibly powerful— there is nothing more fundamental than the need to be understood and to understand. This sermon considers the power of words under two headings: 1) One of the powers of the tongue is a power over you, the speaker; and 2) Words mold our character.

Ephesians 4:25–32

What we say and how we say it is really important. Our words show who we are and what we think, and they mirror God, who speaks to us. Our words aren’t just noises—they have the power to change things and even decide what happens to us. Even though sin can misuse this power, being a Christian means knowing that talking and listening are crucial to understanding each other.

1. Your words are a mirror of you

What we say can reveal our deepest selves. For example, in the Watergate scandal, careless talk showed people’s true colors. Jesus teaches us that our words reflect what’s in our hearts and will be used to judge us. As Christians, the changes brought about by the Holy Spirit should shine through our words, which should echo the love and beauty within us.

2. Words shape who we are

Words don’t just show our thoughts and feelings, they also affect other people. Using words badly can hurt us and others. Words can cut deep, causing real pain and even stirring up fights and disputes.
