Overview

The Bible tells us to honor our parents, no matter who we are and how flawed they are. To do this, we must free ourselves from the idolatry of their approval in order to both forgive and honor them.

Ephesians 6:1–4

Ephesians 6:1-4 sheds light on the importance of the relationship between parents and their children. It emphasizes how our relationship with our parents can shape us. The Bible says children should respect their parents. Paul suggests this respect means obeying our parents. It also instructs parents not to make their children angry but to bring them up with love and discipline.

1. What does this command require?

The fifth commandment asks us to respect our parents. This means we should treat our parents with kindness and care, even if we’re upset with them or they’re not behaving well. This respect is not about obeying them all the time, but about honoring them because it’s the right thing to do for ourselves and for society.

2. Why does this command require it?

Respecting parents is about appreciating the people who took care of us, even if they’re not biologically related to us. Parents are not just mothers but can be fathers too. They teach us how to be independent and make good decisions. It’s important for parents to find balance in discipline and teaching, so they don’t make their children angry or harm their growth.

3. How do we obey the required command?

Respecting parents means more than just agreeing with them. It means showing them respect in ways that make sense in our culture. The relationship between a parent and child is like our relationship with God, showing us why families should love each other unconditionally. To truly respect our parents and understand God’s love, we must look to our heavenly Father’s love.
