Colossians 3:1–15

Let’s take a look at the difference between a heart that’s changed by God and one that’s just trying to act good. This helps us understand what real peace is, often seen with joy, which is a sign that God is working in us. Knowing and growing this God-given peace is important. We can apply the three ways of growing this peace to all the qualities we’re thinking about.

1. What is this God-given peace?

Real peace comes from the way our hearts are, not what’s happening around us, like Lizzy Bennet in “Pride and Prejudice.” The peace from God and Jesus isn’t just a feeling, but a powerful force that guides our hearts, no matter what’s going on, because of our connection with Jesus. It’s important to check if we have this peace and lean on it, instead of trying to control everything around us.

2. How can we grow this God-given peace?

Growing peace involves three steps: thinking deeply, understanding fully, and getting rid of bad habits. This is different from worldly ways that value power more than thought and purpose. Christianity respects every person and encourages us to think deeply, knowing that peace comes from inside, not from what’s happening around us.

Disagreements in the church over class and race often come from selfish desires and putting other things before God. We can overcome this by focusing our thoughts and hearts on God and spiritual matters. Worshiping, praying, and meditating are practical ways to get rid of negative feelings and heal our hearts.

We find true satisfaction and peace in a relationship with Jesus Christ, not in trying to impress others or learning about right and wrong. Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice and our struggle against sin can bring about real change in our character, leading to a transformed life.
