1 Samuel 17:32–50

In the story of David and Goliath from 1 Samuel 17, we see how God’s Spirit can give us courage. Just like in other Bible stories about Othniel, Gideon, Samson, and the disciples in the book of Acts, God’s Spirit helps people face their enemies bravely. This story shows us how important courage is, especially when we are scared. We see this through the different types of courage shown by Saul, Goliath, and David.

1. Saul

When we look at Saul, David, and Goliath’s story, we learn that courage is not just about facing danger; it’s about dealing with our biggest fears and doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. This kind of courage is what helps us fight against selfishness and fear that can cause problems in our lives and for people around us. Courage helps us face our fears and act with love and fairness.

2. Goliath

The story of David and Goliath is more than just a story about overcoming fear. It shows us two different types of courage. Goliath shows the kind of courage that comes from physical strength and believing in yourself, while David shows a type of courage that comes from humility and faith in God. The real courage, as shown by David, is not about not being scared but doing the right thing despite being scared. And faith in God doesn’t mean we won’t face problems.

3. David

Real courage is doing what’s right even when you’re scared, not pretending you’re not scared. We should see ourselves in the scared people in the David and Goliath story, knowing we need a savior instead of trying to be the hero. The greatest act of courage is shown by Jesus. Even though he was vulnerable, he saved all of us through his weakness. He gave up his life and reputation to save us, giving those who believe in him an everlasting identity.
