Overview
The moment Jesus’ identity is revealed, he immediately begins to say, “Follow me.”
In Luke chapters 1 through 8, the main question is “Who is Jesus?” In chapter 9, Peter comes to realize, with the help of the Holy Spirit, that Jesus is not one more prophet, teacher, or sage, but that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. So from chapter 9 on, the question is, “If Jesus is who he says he is, what does it mean to follow him?”
Luke 9 shows us three basic principles that will help us understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. It means 1) setting a new priority, 2) finding a new identity, and 3) living a new mercy.
