Overview
The premise of Christian marriage is that two people are filled with the Holy Spirit and are committed to serving one another. Wives are to grant husbands leadership in the marriage. Husbands are to use that leadership not for their own selfish desires but to sacrificially serve their wives. The purpose of Christian marriage is not for individual self-fulfillment, but to work for the growth and sanctification of the spouse. Lastly, Christian marriage is not an end in itself, but a pointer to Jesus Christ, the ultimate spouse who will never let us down.

Understanding Christian Marriage: Ephesians 5:21–33
City life can be busy and chaotic, but family life can bring peace and prosperity to the city. Just like how the Israelites were told in Jeremiah 29 to build homes, get married, and have children, we too should see marriage not as a burden but as a way to create a better community.
1. The Foundation of Christian Marriage
When we’re filled with the Spirit, as explained in Ephesians 5:18-21, the good news of the gospel becomes central to our lives. This changes us, helping us become less focused on ourselves and more willing to serve others. In a marriage, this means both partners, transformed by the gospel’s message, will want to put each other first.
2. The Purpose of Christian Marriage
The Bible teaches that marriage is a way to show the gospel’s message. It’s a promise to help your partner grow into the person God wants them to be. Unlike our culture, which often views relationships as transactions, the Bible shows us that marriage isn’t about personal gain but about helping your partner become their best self.
3. The Temporary Nature of Christian Marriage
According to the Bible, marriage isn’t the ultimate goal of life. Instead, it’s a sign pointing us to something even greater. Even the best human love can’t save us, but it can reflect Jesus’s love for us, a love that forgives and accepts us despite our mistakes. Understanding this can help us have healthier marriages, focusing on forgiveness and growth rather than perfection and can prevent struggles within marriages.
