Prayer both requires and creates self-knowledge, honesty, and humility. Repentance is a crucial, on-going form of prayer that entails self-examination, confession of sin as sin, and a forsaking of it as well. Genuine repentance is marked by an absence of blame-shifting and self-pity, and results in greater freedom and joy. Yet the process can be painful and may not be brief.
