Tim Keller | October 30, 2016
When Jesus tells the disciples that one of them is going to betray him to death, we learn something that’s usually overlooked.
Notice that before Jesus even deals with Judas or talks to Judas, he talks to the disciples and he says, “but this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture.” He’s actually saying they’re about to go into a dark time. They’re going to be confused and in despair. But if they knew the scripture the way he knows the scripture, they would know there’s a way through.
Jesus was able to get through things because 1) the scripture was his comprehensive authority, 2) he read it as a life changing story, and 3) it turned into his lifeline in adversity.

In The Prodigal God, Tim Keller examines the way Jesus presents the parable to speak both to those who run from God and to those who try to earn his love by being good. It reveals the heart of the gospel—a message of hope for both the rebellious younger brother and the judgmental older brother, and an invitation for all to experience God’s grace.
