Mark 7:24–37

Mark’s gospel keeps asking us to think about who Jesus is and how we should interact with Him. It doesn’t paint God as a harsh ruler or an ever-present spiritual friend. Instead, it gives us a fresh view on how and why we should connect with Jesus.

1. How we should connect with Jesus

The story of the Syrophoenician woman shows her brave faith and willpower as she asks Jesus to help her daughter, even though society and religion are against her. The story also explains how insults worked in old times, especially the word “dog”, and highlights the importance of order and Jesus’ main mission to help Israel. The story ends by showing the woman’s humility, her understanding that she’s not perfect, and her belief that she deserves God’s kindness.

2. Why it’s okay to connect with Jesus this way

Jesus’ miracle of healing a man who couldn’t hear or speak using sign language shows His deep care and knowledge, fulfilling an old prediction about the Messiah in Isaiah 35. Jesus is always full of surprises and gives what’s needed, breaking down social walls and encouraging humility and acceptance. It’s important to admit we’re not perfect, accept God’s love, and approach people with a humble confidence.
