Understanding Jesus as Our Shepherd

In John 10, Jesus uses a simple picture to help us understand who he is. He says he’s like a shepherd, and we are like his sheep. This image tells us a lot about who Jesus is, what he does for us, and how we should live.

1. Jesus knows us, like a shepherd knows his sheep

Think about it – a good shepherd knows every one of his sheep. He knows if they’re scared or if they’re lost. Jesus knows us that well too. He knows when we’re confused or anxious, and like a shepherd, he looks after us and keeps us safe.

2. We need Jesus, like sheep need a shepherd

Sheep can’t take care of themselves; they need a shepherd to guide them. We’re like that too, spiritually speaking. We can’t find our own way to God or make ourselves good enough for him. We need Jesus to help us, to guide us, and to bless us.

3. Jesus values us, even to the point of giving his life for us

A good shepherd would risk his life to protect his sheep. Jesus did more than that – he gave his life for us, even though he knows all our mistakes and weaknesses. He values us that much. This is the heart of the Gospel message – Jesus loves us and gave his life for us.

4. Jesus gives us what we need, like a shepherd provides for his sheep

A shepherd makes sure his sheep have everything they need. Jesus does that for us too. He guides us, provides for us, and wants us to follow him. And more than that, he wants us to care for others, to share his love with them, and to guide them towards him.
