According to the Scripture, marriage is a divine invention. It stands apart from other human institutions because it didn’t evolve out of human thinking. And the basic principles for marriage that are laid out in Ephesians 5 are critical to our understanding of what God says marriage is.
We’ll look now at the first of these basic principles: Self-centeredness is the main enemy of any marriage.

Marriage, a gift from God, requires love, kindness, and setting aside our selfishness, with the help of the Holy Spirit. It’s about promising to be there for each other, valuing understanding and support more than good looks, and treating the relationship with utmost importance, through humility and selflessness. The message of the gospel shows us that even though we might have more faults than we think, we are loved and accepted far more than we can imagine. And by admitting our faults and forgiving others, we can grow into people who can truly love and be loved.
