The baptism is the first key event (found in all four gospels) in the “manifestation” of Jesus in the world. It is through this experience, as a fulfillment of the law, that He begins to demonstrate His humanity. In this passage, we see the Spirit coming upon Jesus, much like prophets and kings were anointed in preparation for their mission. We also hear the voice of the Father’s approval, a reminder that the gospel sends us out because we have been approved, not to gain the Father’s approval. He experiences baptism like any other human, and yet his baptism is unlike that of any other human!
