Tim Keller | October 3, 1993
The predictions about Jesus Christ’s suffering and glory aren’t just historical events—they’re also messages for all future generations, teaching us how we can grow and change through hard times. Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean you won’t have any more problems, but it does mean you’ll have the strength to overcome them and be better for it. The deep meaning of the gospel and the need to grasp it to be saved, emphasizes why it’s important to keep revisiting the basics of our faith.
1. Being a Christian means God comes to you
What sets Christianity apart from other religions is that it says salvation starts with God, not with what we do. The gospel highlights God’s huge step into our world through Jesus Christ, rather than listing rules we must follow or beliefs we must have. As Christians, our connection with God, the world, and ourselves relies on what Jesus did, not on how well we perform.
2. Being a Christian means God comes in
Christianity isn’t about trying to reach God through our own efforts. It’s about experiencing God’s kindness coming in and changing our lives. It’s not about what we do, but about what Jesus did for us. If we don’t feel the impact of God in our faith journey, it could be a sign that something’s off.
3. Being a Christian means understanding and accepting God’s grace
Grace—like when the bishop in Les Miserables shows surprising kindness to Jean Valjean—goes beyond just being generous. It’s about doing more than expected. This mirrors Jesus’ journey to earth, where he sacrificed himself to save humanity. When we understand and accept God’s grace, it’s a life-changing experience that challenges our pride and our assumptions, guiding us to live a life filled with grace.
