This sermon was preached by Timothy J. Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on Sep 10, 1995. Series: The Book of Acts. Scripture: Acts 1:1-14
Early in the book of Acts, we see the amazing change brought about by the Gospel during the Great Awakening in 18th century France and Britain. This change impacted everyone, regardless of their social class. Some historians believe that a similar awakening could rescue our current Western society. Looking back at the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, we can see a possible guide for such an awakening, showing us how old truths can still apply today.
1. What makes Christianity unique and impactful?
Many people think Christianity is simply about doing good things, but its real heart is the actions of Jesus, especially his suffering. Unlike other religious leaders, Jesus didn’t stop his work after he went to heaven, but sent the Holy Spirit to his followers. Remembering this sends a powerful message about the purpose and power of Christianity, encouraging believers to hope for more and trust in the changes Jesus can make in their lives and the world.
2. How can we truly grasp the heart of Christianity?
Real Christianity needs both truth and power. It’s not just about believing, but also about experiencing the life-changing power of Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension. The Gospel can bring about deep change and freedom in a person’s life. It’s important to balance power and truth, because the Gospel has the potential to transform not just individuals, but society as a whole.
