Overview

If you want to gaze on the gospel as “the angels long to do,” you need to understand what the gospel is, how to gaze into it, and how to read the Old and New Testaments in light of Christ.

1 Peter 1:10–12

In these verses from 1 Peter, Peter talks about how it can be hard for us to feel happy during tough times. He believes this happens because we don’t fully understand the gospel. The gospel, Peter tells us, is more than just stories – it’s a source of deep wisdom that even angels find intriguing. To truly get the gospel, we need to dive into this wisdom.

1. Understand what the gospel really is

The gospel isn’t just a collection of wise words or good advice; it’s a historical event that changed everything. Jesus’ teachings and actions only make sense because of his death and resurrection. The key part of the gospel is Jesus dying for all people. Everything else in the Bible is built on this foundation.

2. Reading the Bible helps you see the gospel

The Old Testament prophets and the New Testament apostles give us a peek into the gospel that even angels find fascinating. The prophets hint at the gospel, while the apostles deliver it, guided by the Holy Spirit. When reading the Bible, remember that it’s God speaking through human authors. To truly understand the gospel, we need to see the Bible as a letter from God and respect its authority.

3. The Bible centers on Jesus’ suffering and glory

The entire Bible focuses on Jesus’ pain and glory. Everything, from prophecies to Israel’s history, points to Jesus as the real Prophet, Priest, and King. When we read the Bible with this understanding, the gospel can touch and change every part of our lives. It helps us see the endless depth of the gospel and its power to change us.
