What Jesus does in Mark 2 is very surprising: it shocks three different groups of people.
In this passage, we have the story of some friends who lower a paralytic through a roof in order to bring him to Jesus. This passage teaches us a lot about who Jesus is. And one of the best ways to understand what it teaches us is to look at the three surprised groups.
Let’s look at what surprises 1) the seekers of the healing, 2) the readers of the story, and 3) the leaders of the people.

In The Prodigal God, Tim Keller examines the way Jesus presents the parable to speak both to those who run from God and to those who try to earn his love by being good. It reveals the heart of the gospel—a message of hope for both the rebellious younger brother and the judgmental older brother, and an invitation for all to experience God’s grace.
