Orphans or Children (5th)

Ephesians 6:1–4

The fifth commandment tells children to honor and obey their parents. We can see the importance of this rule through a story about an old man and his son’s family. It shows us why it’s vital for people of all ages, especially adults, to respect their families. Lastly, we talk about what this commandment means, why it’s important, and how to follow it.

1. What does this commandment ask for?

When we’re told to honor our parents, it means we should respect them. It doesn’t mean we have to always agree with them or do everything they say. This rule is smart because it applies to everyone, no matter who your parents are or how old you are. It’s important to know that honoring your parents is different from obeying them; you can respect them while still making choices based on what you believe and what’s right.

2. Why does it command this?

Respecting your parents, whether they’re your birth parents or adoptive parents, is a key part of how the world should work. Even if they’re not perfect, parents are important for keeping things organized and free. They’re the first ones to show us how things should work in the family. The Bible tells us that parents are supposed to teach us values and help us understand right from wrong, and this helps society follow God’s rules.

3. How can we do it?

To honor your parents, you should understand their importance and know that they’ve influenced you, even if they’re not perfect. It’s good to be aware of the good things you’ve gotten from your parents and to forgive them for their mistakes. This helps you have a healthy relationship with them and feel free on your own. Being a Christian means acknowledging God as your Father, feeling His endless love, and growing mature and free by accepting Him as your Father.
