1 Peter 2:11–12

Those who follow Jesus Christ are asked to live righteously in a world that might not always agree with their beliefs. They’re encouraged to avoid wrong desires and to shine through their good actions. The verses from 1 Peter 2:11-12 give us three ways to check if we’re truly part of God’s family. These checks help us take a good look at ourselves before we share in the Lord’s Supper.

1. The public test

It’s important for followers of Jesus to show a real change in their lives. This isn’t just about an inner change from being born again, but about how that change shows in our actions and behavior. Our good deeds should be like a lighthouse, showing others the power of God to transform lives.

2. The conflict test

True followers of Jesus can seem fascinating but also strange because of the real change in their lives. People often get the wrong idea about Christianity, thinking it’s about trying really hard to be good, instead of admitting our weaknesses and relying on Jesus. Even if people might think we’re proud, we should live our faith with humility and kindness, showing others the difference Jesus makes in our lives.

3. The fight test

“Over-desires” means wanting something good so much that you’re willing to do wrong things to get it. True followers of Jesus know that nothing should get in the way of their relationship with Him. They work to spot and control these over-desires, aiming to understand and live rightly in a world that might not have the same beliefs.
