Overview

As Christians in the 21st century, we are called to obey God’s laws, because they are tools for understanding and exposing the workings of our heart. Once we realize that we are saved by grace alone and accepted by God, we can respond to God in genuine obedience with transformed hearts. As members of a local Christian community, we become an alternate city within a city, a holy nation, representing Christ and serving the community in which we worship and live.

Exodus 19:2–8; 20:1–3; 24:7–11

We explore the complex idea of the spiritual role of God’s law in today’s faiths, emphasizing that following God’s commands is not about trying to earn our way to heaven, but rather about deepening our bond with Him. We highlight the powerful change that God’s salvation brings, which can create a completely new kind of society, underlining the importance of a Christian community that is loving, unified, and generous. We finish by discussing the profound importance of Jesus Christ’s selfless act of love, which enables us to enter into and stay in a special promise, or covenant, with God.
