Jesus’ model for Christian prayer begins with a revolutionary address: the transcendent God of the universe is also our loving Father! As a result of the gospel, when we pray, we are praying as children of God. Jesus has earned for us an unbreakable, gracious, family tie, with all of the privileges, duties, and disciplines that relationship implies. Every word of the Lord’s Prayer flows out of this primary orientation – God is our Father.
