Overview

We’ve been looking at what the Bible says about prayer and spirituality, and this message concludes the series. We are examining the Lord’s Prayer — the one place in the Bible where Jesus himself is asked about prayer and spirituality. It’s the richest single source of information in the entire Bible on how to pray, not because it’s a case study of someone praying, but more that it’s a model of true prayer for everyone.

We’re going to take a look at this under three headings. 1) What you must have before you pray; 2) What you must do as you pray; and 3) The key to getting them all.

Matthew 6:5–15

True, personal prayer shouldn’t be like a show, just to impress others. Instead, it should be like talking to God, who is our caring Father. The Lord’s Prayer is a good example of how to talk to Him. It’s important to remember that prayer isn’t about putting on a great act, but about building a relationship with God through grace. To pray effectively, you need to really want to know God, be willing to forgive others, and let go of your own plans, trusting in God’s plan. This kind of prayer can transform us into people who pray like Jesus did.
