Overview

“The modern critique of religion comes from Freud, Marx, and Nietzsche. Freud claimed that religion is psychological self-justification, that we created God to assuage our guilt and fear. Marx claimed that religion is a sociological self-justification, that we created God to exclude those unlike us. Nietzsche said that religion is nothing but a power trip, an attempt to use God to accrue power over others. However, Jesus himself critiqued religion and turned it on its head.

Open Forums are specifically designed for skeptics or those wrestling with the claims of Christianity. Each Open Forum included a brief concert by guest artists followed by a talk and open mic Q&A with Timothy Keller. This audio recording includes the talk only.”

Message Overview

During the last century, many people started questioning religion rather than simply accepting it. Some even think that as science improves, we won’t need religion anymore. However, they’re forgetting that people have a deep need for spiritual connection, and religion can actually bring us together instead of tearing us apart. Great thinkers like Freud, Marx, and Nietzsche have criticized religion, helping us see where religious institutions might be going wrong. But these criticisms don’t take away from the incredible, life-changing power of faith, which is perfectly demonstrated in Jesus.
