No Condemnation

1 John 3:19–24

The main theme of 1 John is prayer and how it can change us. It talks about the tough feelings of guilt and self-judgment that can come up when we’re in God’s presence, and it highlights the need to move past these feelings to really connect with God through prayer. The scripture also highlights four important aspects of prayer: its universal nature, the way we go about it, the emotional turmoil it can stir up, and the need for confidence in God’s love.

1. Prayer is universal

Prayer is a natural way for the human heart to respond, no matter what one’s beliefs about God are, and this is supported by both Bible teachings and scientific research. Sometimes, we mistakenly think we can do everything on our own and control everything, a lie that started in the Garden of Eden. This can make us forget our true nature, which is to be vulnerable. But as we grow and become more aware of our mortality, we naturally turn to prayer, which is a fundamental part of being human, making it very important to learn how to pray correctly.

2. Prayer is approach

Prayer is more than just an exchange of information, it’s a deeply personal meeting with God that requires vulnerability and our full attention. It’s not just about asking for things, but giving our whole lives to God for Him to examine. Real prayer requires time, focus, and a willingness to let God’s truth guide our thoughts and feelings.

3. Prayer is traumatic

Getting closer to God often makes us feel guilty about ourselves, as we become very aware of our own flaws in comparison to His perfection. This uncomfortable experience shows how close we are to God and is a common theme in the Bible. If this weren’t the case, it would undermine the basic beliefs of Christianity.

4. Prayer requires assurance

God’s power is beyond human understanding, and His forgiveness, shown through Jesus Christ, is a testament to this. Struggles with forgiving ourselves often come from wrong priorities, overshadowing God’s grace. Accepting Christ’s forgiveness, recognizing our names in heaven, and living in His light, brings deep peace and enables us to experience God’s power.
