Just like us, Jeremiah lived in a society full of different opinions, especially about what’s right and wrong. Sometimes, this can make us feel like we’re outsiders, not feeling fully comfortable or happy in the world around us. Jeremiah’s teachings help us understand why we have deep desires for something more, how we can discover this ‘more’, and what life could be like when we do.
1. Why we desire more
Jeremiah talks about a time when Israel was taken away from their home and forced to live in a foreign land, Babylon. This captures the feeling we all have at some point – not feeling at home in the world. It’s like living on a hostile planet like Mars, or facing the emptiness of death. We realize that our true home isn’t just about a physical place but a deep connection with God.
2. How do we find this home?
Sin, or self-centered behavior, can make us feel like we’re far away from God, like being in exile. But there’s hope. Jeremiah talks about Rachel, a woman who cries for her lost children. Just like Rachel, Jesus understands our pain and loneliness. By giving up his life, Jesus shows us the way back to a true home with God.
3. What will life be like there?
Because of Jesus, we can experience a closer, more personal relationship with God. This relationship changes our hearts and makes us want to live in a way that makes God happy. Through prayer, we can grow spiritually and navigate our lives towards this eternal home. While the things and relationships in this world can’t satisfy us fully, we can find real joy and purpose in God’s promise to bring His kingdom to earth.
